In the 21st Century, preserving our environment is a global priority. APEV aims to provide all New Zealanders with a cleaner, healthier, more secure future by accelerating the electrification of the transportation fleet. Our goal is to achieve the largest annual percentage reduction in transport fossil fuel consumption of any OECD country by 2025.

We are working with central and local governments, electric vehicle innovators, the motor trade, fleet operators, energy companies and the media to grow interest in, and demand for, electric vehicles. Why?

Our fossil fuel dependency has significant external costs - economic, environmental and community. In the past year, the cost of NZ oil imports has risen 22% to almost $8 billion. In other words, it takes our entire dairy exports just to feed our imported oil habit. Yet it’s not just the economic cost. Greenhouse gas emissions from transport rose 76% from 1990 to 2007. In Auckland alone, air quality related health costs have been estimated at $240 million per annum.

Today, NZ produces 79% of its electricity from renewable sources. This is projected to rise to 90% by 2025. Thus, the electrification of NZ’s light vehicle fleet will not only offset the considerable cost of importing oil from foreign sources, but have considerable environmental benefits such as improved air quality and the on flowing health care benefits.

Over the next 2 years, dozens of manufacturers are bringing new electric car models to market and the price of electric vehicles (EVs) is expected to drop dramatically. Further, in 2012, leading edge componentry for cost effectively converting existing cars to electric will become available on the NZ market, national guidelines for conversions will be completed and EV conversion training programmes will be implemented.

Let's work together to improve our environment, improve our energy supply security by reducing our dependence on imported fossil fuels, and position NZ as a global leader in EV adoption. Click here to download the document "Five Great Reasons to Join APEV."
